Being a Taylor Swift fan (I jumped on board when Red came out), it has been fascinating to behold Taylor Swift's transformation into a snarky, but sexy pop queen. Throughout the years, her voice has drastically improved and she has been able to attract a wider audience like honey attracts bees. The Taylor who I know and love has unfortunately somewhat disappeared. It's like her record company decided to secretly murder the innocent Taylor Swift who was singing quirky songs about her ex-boyfriends and replace her with a much more diva-like twin who still sings about unpredictable relationships but in a much more commanding, erotic way. Damn, I'd never thought I'd say this, but Swift's starting to turn me on. I used to look at her like an older sister. Anyway, my initial reaction to the album is that it's marginally better than 1989 which was a much sleepier affair and her first record to make me feel distant from Swift because of the pretentious swagger, but now I've kind of gotten used to it. This album, reputation, has a more confident and bombastic feel to it, but there are a lot of moments on the album where it feels forced and overstated, often drowning Taylor. It's clearly an overproduced album, yet it doesn't feel sophisticated, which is a fairly typical problem in today's pop music. Some songs are really vibrant and enjoyable, however, and I do admit Taylor can churn out a very catchy pop song. When I heard the singles from 1989 before the album's release, I found myself disliking the songs but once the album came out I realised I knew all the lyrics by heart. And the same thing happened with this album. I certainly prefer the more low-key songs like Call It What You Want (awesome R&B feel to it), and New Year's Day is a wonderful throwback to Taylor's earlier records. Now that's my sis! My favorite moment is probably in the anthemic, somewhat whiny This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things when the song spontaneously stops and Taylor's bursts out laughing. The laughter's cute... but kind of scary too. I wish Taylor tried to be a more convincing lyricist. Honestly focusing a whole song around the saying "this is why we can't have nice things" comes off as a bit retarded, and there are other embarrassing lines scattered throughout the album, but the Taylor Swift of 2017 doesn't ask to be taken seriously, just enjoyed. I sincerely believe Swift steered into mainstream territory so that the media wouldn't take her as seriously anymore and just let her be.
